Kansas Producers Encouraged to Apply for Farmers for Soil Health Program by August 31

Posted Monday August 3, 2026

Kansas farmers interested in improving soil health while receiving financial assistance for cover crop adoption are encouraged to enroll in the Farmers for Soil Health program before the August 31, 2026, application deadline.

Farmers for Soil Health is a farmer-led initiative operating in 20 states, including Kansas, to increase the adoption of cover crops and other soil health practices that improve farm resilience, profitability, and environmental stewardship. The program offers financial incentives and technical support to help producers successfully implement cover crops on their operations.

Eligible producers growing corn, soybeans, wheat, grain sorghum, or cotton may apply regardless of previous cover crop experience. Participating farmers can receive incentive payments of up to $35 per acre on as many as 2,000 acres enrolled in the program. The program also offers one-year contracts that provide producers with greater flexibility while maintaining access to technical assistance and conservation resources.

“Healthy soils are the foundation of productive and resilient farming operations,” said a Kansas Association of Conservation Districts representative. “Programs like Farmers for Soil Health help producers explore conservation practices that can improve soil function, reduce erosion, enhance water infiltration, and strengthen long-term farm sustainability.”

Farmers enrolled in the program are connected with technical advisors who can assist with enrollment, eligibility requirements, cover crop planning, and implementation. Advisors can also help producers gather required documentation and navigate the application process.

The Farmers for Soil Health program was developed through partnerships among leading agricultural organizations and conservation partners with the goal of expanding cover crop adoption nationwide. Through education, technical assistance, and financial incentives, the initiative supports producers who want to build healthier soils while maintaining productive farming operations.

Kansas producers interested in participating are encouraged to begin the enrollment process as soon as possible to ensure applications are completed before the August 31 deadline. Enrollment information, eligibility requirements, and program details are available online.
